Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has called for a nationwide review into the funding of the sexual violence sector. This came as sexual violence survivor agencies around the country have been forced to close or reduce hours due to funding shortfalls, despite increases in referrals.
Manawatu Abuse and Rape Crisis support Manager Ann Kent said the agency had seen a 60 per cent increase in police referrals in the past year alone, however it was likely counselling services would be cut back by up to 14 hours, because of the funding shortfall.
Minister Bennett said, "I am currently investigating the funding provided to the sector to determine exactly where it comes from, what it is provided for, and if any of this money is being used to cross-subsidise other services. I'm also planning to look into the nature of services being provided by organisations around the country, and how accessible those services are for the people who need them."
Paula Bennett took on Ministerial responsibility for sexual violence in February 2013.
