ACC has provided Gandhi Nivas with an additional $1.7m in funding over three years, to expand their services.
Gandhi Nivas provides emergency housing, counselling and referral for men who have either been issued with a Police Safety Order, or are otherwise involved with police for family violence. This includes operating secure housing facilities that provide temporary accommodation and services for men. The programme also includes services for the partners/women and children who remain in their home.
The first facility was set up in Ōtāhuhu, Counties Manukau in 2014. The second facility providing emergency housing and intervention services was built in the converted Te Atatū Police Station. A third facility is planned to open in Papakura, South Auckland later this year.
Gandhi Nivas and Sahaayta Counselling & Social Support signed an agreement with NZ Police to reflect their expansion in Auckland.
The original programme was initially designed to provide services to South Asian and Fijian Indian men, but a 2016 preliminary statistical description of the programme found that Māori, Pacific, Middle Eastern, Pākehā and Asian men also use the service.
