The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed two technical packages to help communities and government agencies take advantage of the best available evidence to prevent violence. The packages focus on sexual violence and child abuse and neglect.
The CDC describes a technical package as "a collection of strategies that represent the best available evidence to prevent or reduce public health problems like violence." Each package includes:
- strategy - direction or actions to achieve the goal
- approach - ways to achieve the strategy (e.g. programs, policies, and practices)
- evidence - research that supports each approach
The approaches are designed to impact individual behaviours as well as broader areas including family, school, community, and societal factors. They are intended to be used in a multi-sector effort to prevent violence. The packages include strategies to both prevent violence and lessen the impacts on victims and families.
