The second annual Families and Whānau Status Report by the Families Commission proposes two draft frameworks to measure family and whānau wellbeing.

The aim of the report is to "stimulate critical thinking and ongoing discussion about how to define and measure family and whānau wellbeing, and what this means for the development of policy and the delivery of programmes and services aimed at increasing the wellbeing of families and whānau."

The two frameworks reflect the different cultural conceptualisations of family and whānau in non-Māori and Māori communities, and also the different conceptualisations of ‘wellbeing’.

During 2014/15, the Families Commission will finalise how they will measure the range of factors that influence and contribute towards family and whānau wellbeing.

The Families Commission says in the future, the Status Report will "report broadly on family trends, attitudes and aspirations within the wider economic and social context in which families and whānau carry out their daily activities."

The first Families and Whānau Status Report was released in 2013.
