Concerns have been raised about the fate of a report by the independent Expert Advisory Group on Family Violence brought together by the Government in 2013.

TVNZ reported that an informed sector source said the report had been "effectively, completely buried." They said, "The public need to know where the report is, and what the Government is doing about family violence?"

Associate Minister for Social Development, Tariana Turia, announced the establishment of the Expert Advisory Group in October 2013, saying,

"The Group has a range of expertise and experience in this field and will work towards solutions by the end of 2013. The members have been chosen not only for their expertise, but also for their commitment to action. As a result their advice is expected to be able to be translated into change on the ground that is tangible and measureable."

She also said, "Independent advice is an important component in achieving an effective, well-integrated family violence system which delivers accessible, high quality services for all New Zealanders who are affected by family violence."

There was urgency around the work of the Group, which met twice in late 2013 and completed their report for immediate consideration by Cabinet in December.

TVNZ reported that since then, that there has been no decision on its findings and Group members feel they've been "kept in the dark."

The Ministry of Social Development was also criticised by sector groups for providing only 48 hours for them to help inform the Group's work.
