E Tu Whānau has launched a new Charter of Commitment. It represents a public, formal and collective stand against violence and uses Māori cultural and spiritual strengths as the foundation for change.
The Charter states:
"We acknowledge that all violence towards whānau is unacceptable within Te Ao Māori, and that such acts of violence are considered a transgression that breach the mana and tapu of the individual, their whānau and their entire whakapapa.
We declare that violence against wāhine and tamariki within whānau is not part of our cultural tradition, and that the actions and solutions that work best for Māori lie within Māori values and practices."
It asks people to take a stand against violence and pledge support for violence-free, positive futures for tamariki, mokopuna and all of Te Ao Māori.
E Tu Whānau asks people to show their commitment to the Charter by adding their names on the E Tu Whānau website, where the Charter is available for download.
The Charter was officially launched by Associate Minister for Social Development Tariana Turia at Hirangi Marae, Turangi on 14 August 2014.
