Kiribati launches eighth Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu framework

The Kiribati Family Violence Conceptual Framework was launched by New Zealand Kiribati communities as part of Independence Day celebrations on 11 July 2015.

Boutokaan te mweeraoi – A Conceptual Framework for enhancing I-Kiribati wellbeing is the eighth part of the Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu cultural framework which addresses family violence within Pacific communities in New Zealand. Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu is informed by, and aligned with, seven ethnic specific conceptual frameworks addressing family violence, and a literature review.

The Kiribati conceptual framework provides a way of addressing and preventing family violence based on the core concepts, values and beliefs of te katei ni Kiribati (the Kiribati philosophical worldview). The framework primarily aims to inform I-Kiribati practitioners and mainstream organisations in working with I-Kiribati people affected by family violence, but may also guide other government and non-government agencies in service delivery to New Zealand I-Kiribati communities.

Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu is part of the Ministry of Social Development's Community Investment strategy.
