Dr Kim McGregor, QSO, has been appointed in the role of Chief Victims Advisor to Government.
The new role of Chief Victims Advisor will be responsible for providing the Government with independent advice on legislative, policy and other issues relating to victims of crime.
Making the announcement, Justice Minister Amy Adams said "Dr McGregor will also assist the Government in fulfilling our election promise to make the New Zealand justice system more responsive and easier for victims to navigate as part of a wider strategy to improve services and support for victims and witnesses."
The role is part-time and the appointment made for an initial two years. The role does not involve advising victims directly. Further information about the role and contact details are available on the Victims Information website.
Stuff reported that the role is to provide advice to Government, not to comment in the media.
Dr McGregor has worked in sexual violence for almost 30 years and has been the executive director of Rape Prevention Education for the past 10 years.
