Professor Linda Waimarie Nikora has been appointed to Co-Director of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and Professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Auckland.
Professor Nikora (Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, Tūhoe) was welcomed into her new role at Waipapa Marae on 27 October 2017.
She joins Professor Jacinta Ruru from the University of Otago as the other Co-Director of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, New Zealand's Māori Centre of Research Excellence.
Professor Nikora was the founding director of the University of Waikato’s Māori and Psychology Research Unit. Her research specialties are community psychology, applied social psychology, ethnopsychology and Māori development. She has worked in community, social and indigenous psychologies with a specific focus on Māori wellbeing and self-determination. Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga lists her recent areas of work as: Tangi, Māori ways of mourning; traditional body modification; ethnic status as a stressor; Māori identity development; cultural safety and competence; Māori mental health and recovery; social and economic determinants of health; homelessness; relational health; and social connectedness.
Speaking to Māori Television, Professor Nikora asked "How can we as a people flourish, not just in terms of health and well-being but education and right across the spectrum in terms of what it means to enjoy a meaningful life?"
