This Learning Network and Knowledge Hub webinar will demystify the concept of coercive control and talk about the need to address it before the potential offence takes effect in the Canadian context.

In the fall of 2021, the Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale launched the project Améliorer la pratique judiciaire pour accroître la sécurité des femmes victimes de violence conjugale [Improving judicial practice to increase the safety of women experiencing intimate partner violence]. This project aims to raise awareness with practitioners from the socio-judicial community and train them on the concept of coercive control, so that they can recognize the full range of manifestations of intimate partner violence (IPV) and develop more appropriate practices to improve the safety and freedom of survivors. At the same time, in recent years, efforts to create a coercive control offence in Canadian criminal law have advanced considerably. The presentation will demystify the concept of coercive control and talk about the need to address it before the potential offence takes effect. Lastly, this presentation will provide an opportunity to share the many tools developed for socio-judicial practitioners who work with survivors of domestic violence, thus offering them concrete avenues for action.

Learning Objectives

By attending this Webinar, participants will be better able to:
